MEXT vs JASSO Scholarship: Eligibility, Benefits & Application Process
Compare Japan's MEXT government scholarship and JASSO support by applicant stage, selection route, coverage, application channel and obligations.
By SJLA Scholarship Guidance Team · Published · Updated
Quick Answer
MEXT and JASSO are not interchangeable scholarships. MEXT is a Japanese Government scholarship with categories and recommendation routes that can support selected students before enrollment. JASSO's Honors Scholarship supports eligible privately financed international students, commonly through their Japanese institution or an EJU-linked reservation route. Check the exact year's guidelines before applying.
MEXT vs JASSO
| Factor | MEXT Scholarship | JASSO Honors Scholarship |
|---|---|---|
| Main applicant type | Selected government-scholarship candidates | Eligible privately financed international students |
| Typical timing | Often begins before travel/enrollment | Usually connected to enrollment or EJU reservation |
| Application channel | Embassy or university recommendation, depending on category | School recommendation or eligible EJU reservation procedure |
| Coverage | Defined in each MEXT category guideline | Monthly stipend for the approved period |
| Selection | Documents, exams/interview or university process | Academic, financial, language and program conditions |
MEXT Pathway
MEXT publishes separate annual guidelines for undergraduate, research, college of technology, specialised training and other categories. Age, education, nationality, health, arrival period, language, examinations and university placement differ. For Nepal, follow the Embassy of Japan in Nepal announcement and the linked MEXT guideline, not an old coaching notice.
JASSO Pathway
The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship is for eligible privately financed international students with strong academic and character records who face financial difficulty. Depending on the route, students apply through the institution in Japan or request consideration through EJU. A reservation does not become payment automatically; enrollment, school recommendation and current eligibility still matter.
Which One Should You Target?
- Target MEXT if you fit an open government category and can prepare for its competitive selection before enrollment.
- Track JASSO if you will study as a privately financed student and meet the school/EJU route.
- Apply for other scholarships too, but check whether awards can be combined.
Application Safety Checklist
- Download the exact year and category guideline.
- Apply only through the named Embassy, university, school or JASSO system.
- Check eligibility before paying for translations or tests.
- Keep grades, attendance and language evidence current.
- Never pay someone who promises selection.
- Plan full finance because scholarships are competitive.
