Japanese Personal Pronouns: A Beginner's Guide to Natural Japanese

One of the most surprising things for Japanese language learners is that Japanese people rarely use pronouns. Understanding why — and when to use them — will make your Japanese sound much more natural.

Why Japanese People Drop Pronouns

In Japanese, the subject is usually understood from context. Saying わたし in every sentence sounds unnatural and repetitive:

  • ❌ わたしは がくせいです。わたしは にほんごを べんきょうします。わたしは カトマンズに すんでいます。
  • ✅ がくせいです。にほんごを べんきょうします。カトマンズに すんでいます。
Pro Tip for Students: When you write JLPT essays or speak in exams, using わたし once at the beginning is enough. After that, context does the work!

Be Careful with あなた (You)

Unlike English where "you" is used freely, あなた is considered rude in many situations in Japan. Instead:

  • Use the person's name + さん: たなかさん、げんきですか？ (Are you well, Tanaka-san?)
  • Use their title: せんせい、しつもんが あります。 (Teacher, I have a question.)
Cultural Note: あなた is used by wives addressing husbands (like "dear") and in formal surveys. Avoid it in daily conversation!

Referring to Others Politely

Instead of かれ/かのじょ, use these polite alternatives:

  • この ひと – this person (nearby)
  • その ひと – that person (near listener)
  • あの ひと – that person (far away)

Example:

  • あの ひとは がくせいですか？ – Is he/she a student?

こちら, そちら, あちら – Ultra-Polite References

In formal or business situations, use こちら/そちら/あちら to refer to people AND directions:

  • こちらは シェフです。 – This (person) is the chef.
  • トイレは どちらですか？ – Where is the washroom?
  • きょうしつは そちらです。 – The classroom is that way.
