The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognized Japanese language certification worldwide. But with five levels from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest), which one do you actually need? Let's break it down.

N5 – Basic Japanese
- Vocabulary: ~800 words
- Kanji: ~100 characters
- Ability: Read and understand simple sentences; understand slow, basic conversations
- Study time: 150-250 hours
- Use case: Minimum requirement for student visa application
N4 – Elementary Japanese
- Vocabulary: ~1,500 words
- Kanji: ~300 characters
- Ability: Read and understand everyday topics; follow basic conversations at natural speed
- Study time: 300-600 hours
- Use case: Required for some SSW visa applications; better job prospects in Japan
N3 – Intermediate Japanese
