Japanese な-Adjectives: The Complete Beginner's Guide (JLPT N5)

After mastering い-adjectives, the next step is understanding な-adjectives (na-keiyōshi). These behave differently and are essential for JLPT N5 success. Let's break it down clearly.

What Are な-Adjectives?

な-adjectives are descriptive words that use to connect to a noun. They conjugate like nouns, making them easier in some ways!

Common な-adjectives:

  • しずか (shizuka) – quiet
  • げんき (genki) – energetic, healthy
  • べんり (benri) – convenient, useful
  • にぎやか (nigiyaka) – lively
  • ひま (hima) – free (not busy)

How to Conjugate な-Adjectives

な-adjectives follow the same pattern as nouns:

FormPatternExample (べんり – useful)
Present Positive~ + ですべんりです (It is useful)
Present Negative~ + ではありませんべんりではありません (It is not useful)
Past Positive~ + でしたべんりでした (It was useful)
Past Negative~ + ではありませんでしたべんりではありませんでした (It was not useful)

Describing Nouns with な-Adjectives

Unlike い-adjectives, you must add between the adjective and the noun:

  • げんきな ひと – an energetic person
  • しずかな まち – a quiet town
  • べんりな でんわ – a convenient phone
Remember: い-adjectives connect directly (たかい ほん), but な-adjectives need な (しずかな まち).

Special な-Adjectives: すき, きらい, じょうず, へた

These four words express likes, dislikes, and abilities. They all use the particle for the object:

すき (Like) & きらい (Dislike)

  • この ワインが すきです。 – I like this wine.
  • さかなが きらいです。 – I dislike fish.
  • アメリカの おんがくが すきでした。 – I liked American music.

じょうず (Good at) & へた (Bad at)

  • サラさんは にほんごが じょうずです。 – Sarah is good at Japanese.
  • わたしは りょうりが へたです。 – I am bad at cooking.
Important: When talking about your OWN skills, use とくい (strong point) instead of じょうず, which sounds like you're praising yourself.

Tricky な-Adjectives That Look Like い-Adjectives

These words end in い but are actually な-adjectives. This is a classic JLPT trap!
