Japanese Particles: The Building Blocks of Every Sentence (JLPT N5)

Particles are the glue that holds Japanese sentences together. They tell you WHO does WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and HOW. Mastering particles is the single most important step for JLPT N5 success.

What Are Japanese Particles?

Particles (助詞 joshi) are small words placed after nouns, verbs, or phrases to show their grammatical role. Think of them as road signs that guide the meaning of a sentence.

Particle は (wa) – The Topic Marker

は marks the topic of the sentence — what you're talking about:

  • わたしは がくせいです。 – (As for me,) I am a student.
  • にほんごは むずかしいですね。 – Japanese is difficult, isn't it?
Key Insight: は is written as "ha" but pronounced "wa" when used as a particle. This is a JLPT reading question favorite!

Particle が (ga) – The Subject Marker

が marks the subject performing an action or answers "who/what" questions:

  • だれが がくせいですか? – Who is the student?
  • わたしが がくせいです。 – I am the student.
  • なにが むずかしいですか? – What is difficult?

Particle を (wo) – The Object Marker

を marks the direct object of an action verb:

  • パンを たべます。 – I eat bread.
  • にほんごを べんきょうします。 – I study Japanese.
  • テレビを みます。 – I watch TV.

Particle に (ni) – Direction, Time, Location

に has multiple uses:

  1. Direction/destination: がっこうに いきます。(I go to school.)
  2. Time: 7じに おきます。(I wake up at 7.)
  3. Location of existence: つくえの うえに ほんが あります。(There is a book on the desk.)

Particle で (de) – Location of Action & Means

  1. Where an action happens: レストランで たべます。(I eat at a restaurant.)
  2. Means/method: バスで いきます。(I go by bus.)
  3. Tool/instrument: はしで たべます。(I eat with chopsticks.)

Particle の (no) – Possession & Connection

の connects two nouns, often showing possession or description:

  • わたしの ほん – my book
  • とうきょうの かいしゃ – a company in Tokyo
  • にほんの たべもの – Japanese food

Particle も (mo) – Also, Too

も replaces は, が, or を to mean "also":

  • わたし にほんじんです。 – I am also Japanese.
  • わたし。 – Me too.

Particle ね (ne) – Agreement Seeking

ね at the end of a sentence seeks agreement, like "right?" or "isn't it?":

  • にほんごは むずかしいです。 – Japanese is difficult, isn't it?
  • いいです。 – That's nice, right?

Particle よ (yo) – Emphasis & Assertion

よ emphasizes the speaker's opinion or new information:

  • この パンは おいしいです。 – This bread is delicious! (I'm telling you)
  • あの ひとは せんせいです。 – That person is a teacher! (just so you know)

Common JLPT N5 Particle Mistakes

  1. ❌ がっこう いきます → ✅ がっこう いきます (direction needs に)
  2. ❌ だれ きましたか → ✅ だれ きましたか (question words use が)
  3. ❌ バス いきます → ✅ バス いきます (means of transport uses で)
