TITP vs SSW vs Student Visa: Honest Comparison for Nepali Applicants
Compare Japan's training, skilled-work and education routes by purpose, work rights, tests, costs, mobility and the 2027 system transition.

Quick Answer
Student status is for education, SSW is for full-time work in designated shortage fields, and the Technical Intern Training Program was built around skill acquisition rather than being the same as SSW. Japan is replacing TITP with the Employment for Skill Development system from April 2027, so applicants must verify which rules apply at the actual application date.
Pathway Comparison
| Path | Primary purpose | Key entry basis |
|---|---|---|
| Student | Education | School admission, finance and immigration review |
| SSW | Full-time skilled work | Field requirements, tests/route and employer |
| TITP / transition system | Training and skill development framework | Approved implementing/supervising structure and applicable rules |
Student Route
Students must study full-time. Part-time work needs permission and limits apply. Tuition and living costs should be funded before departure. It is the right route only when the education itself is the real goal.
SSW Route
SSW is employment. Type (i) workers need the required field ability and Japanese, an eligible employer, immigration approval and support. Duties must stay within the authorised field.
2027 Transition
Japan's revised law provides for the Employment for Skill Development system to begin on April 1, 2027, replacing the current TITP framework. Official materials describe a three-year development route intended to build workers toward SSW Type (i) level in covered fields. Operational details continue to be published, so older recruitment explanations can become outdated.
